The introduction of video into the recruitment process is gaining popularity, but there is still some way to go. A video enables a job seeker to present him/herself in a professional manner to a potential employer. Whilst some employers may not see the value of video, others are becoming more comfortable in using video to assist with recruitment decisions.

So, why video? There are a couple of reasons why it is important for job seekers to consider preparing video introductions for employers, namely:

1. Video allows the individual to differentiate him/herself from the many others out there
2. A video will show the employer that you are taking the job application process seriously - the mere fact that you have gone to the trouble to prepare and record a video is proof of this
3. You can highlight certain points in your CV/resume and/or talk about specific achievements that tie in with the role you are applying for. The employer can then look out for this information when reviewing the CV/resume
4. The video will highlight your confidence and showcase your presentation skills
5. The employer can pick up key points about your body language and dress sense

It is really not that difficult to record a video. Most mobile phones on the market have built in cameras, or alternatively a PC webcam can be used.

The following tips should enable you to record a successful video introduction:

• Plan in advance what you would like to say. Rehearse the content until you are satisfied with it
• Keep focussed on the camera and try not to look away
• Speak naturally, but confidently
• Dress appropriately, as if you were going for a job interview
• Ask a recruiter to assist you with questions that you feel the employer would request answers to

The more specific the video is to the role you are applying for, the better your chances are of securing your ideal role!
